John HODGENS (1766-1854) - b. England - The internet (and Bill Parker) provided the documentation in the form of a transcription of John HODGENS' obituary I had searched years for. It gives age information and a brief biographical sketch mentioning the fact that John "went to sea at age 7".
IF you have trouble locating the obit text file, try a Search at Google.com (or your favorite Engine) for "obit john hodgens"; it IS published in several places, some with additional comments, etc.
A search of some of the databases (familysearch.org) revealed the Christening record at Soulbury of a male child of a Margaret HODGINS and a William GUESS that would be about the right "time" but no other "proof" of a direct relationship exists - THAT I AM AWARE OF.    Many more details are needed (misspellings are very common, so corrections are welcome).

This is some data based on (and expanded from) a text file - originally converted from a scanned document with OCR software - I received via e-mail from chodgens AT aol.com (Charles H, g-son of June Emmett H).
      I recall hearing much this same version told by Joseph Curtis H, my uncle.   Indeed, it is so similar, I believe he (J. Curtis) either composed or dictated that document.
      As far as I can tell, it seems accurate (although "John HODGENS of England" was always more of a legend to me, that I never could seem to document).
      Notice in particular, the two sons of James that "remained in S.C. when the family moved to Alabama", John B. H and James M(adison?). H. Also, my data is sadly limited re: the daughters (Elizabeth and Mary) that married FANCHERs .
      Although some dates seem 'suspect', I believe them to be typos that are easily resolved or, possibly I am trying to apply them to the wrong events.
